A lower carbon footprint - laying the foundations

November 2007

Chelsea Building Society

The Chelsea Building Society is currently taking a number of proactive steps to help reduce its carbon footprint.

Energy:
Through a partnership with the Carbon Trust, the Chelsea Building Society has been offered a free energy audit of its sites to determine ways of reducing energy consumption. Equipment and energy systems, including heating and air conditioning were assessed, resulting in an action plan for the business.

In addition each branch is measured for energy consumption and will be tasked with reductions in line with the corporate aim of reducing energy consumption by 20%.

In 2005-06 new offices in Gloucestershire were built to BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environment Assessment Method) ‘excellent’ rating.

Travel:
Over 10,000 bus journeys have been made since the launch of a free bus service for all head office staff in Cheltenham, helping to reduce car travel with its associated CO2 emissions.

Staff have been provided with pedometers to encourage walking, plus a cycle purchase scheme helps encourage cycling.

Procurement:
The Chelsea Building Society currently recycles up to 90% of waste produced, recycling plastic, paper and card, mobile phones, cans and glass amongst other items. This reduces the need for and cost of raw materials and saves energy (and carbon) at the same time.
