low carbon driving is possible!

March 2007

I have been concerned about the ever-increasing price of Petrol and Diesel and so decided to do something about it. In 2005 I purchased a 2nd user Toyota Prius (classic) and immediately noticed my petrol bill fall as the hybrid was much more economical than my previous car (the dashboard display regularly displayed in excess of 57mpg). However I was wondering if I could go any further with economy as the fuel prices are still rising, I came across the idea of a 'Tribrid' and convert the hybrid petrol/eletric to use LPG (with its half-price fuel at the pumps). In November 2006 the conversion was done by a Bedminster specialist and ever since I've been enjoying filling up with LPG at about 40p per litre and the vehicle still returns 57mpg. As the vehicle still starts up from cold on petrol for the first mile or so, I occasional need to put a few litres of petrol in (not filled up as that would be excess weight to carry around), but most of the motoring is now on LPG and electric - much cleaner for the environment and cheaper on my pocket.

If I can do it, surely the manufacturers can do it and we'd all benefit?! It would help if the Government took a lead and helped with conversion costs or gave incentives.
