Trials show carbon budgets work

14th March 2009

Everyone in the UK could have their own carbon budget by 2020, says the head of the most comprehensive trial of the idea by the Royal Society of Arts (RSA). Personal allowances set a limit on emissions produced over a year from activities such as driving and heating homes. People could switch to greener services or do without to meet their allowance, sell credits if they did not use them, or buy credits if they went over the budget because of more highly polluting activities such as flying. The RSA's CarbonLimited study began in 2006. On average the 140 volunteers cut emissions by almost 5%. Click here for full story.
